KUALA LUMPUR – Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s statement tonight that no agreement has been made to form a government with Perikatan Nasional (PN) confirms rumours swirling that BN is not doing a deal with PN yet.
Sources told The Vibes that BN, which has 30 seats now, is not jumping at the immediate opportunity to collaborate with PN as remaining in the government while doing so will have a long-term impact on plans to rejuvenate the coalition.
BN lost 49 seats from the 79 it won in 2018.
“Many of these seats were lost to PN, so if they were to cooperate with PN, how are they going to retake the seats they lost?
“If they join forces with Pakatan Harapan (PH), they can govern and also prepare to retake the lost seats in the next general election of GE16,” said a highly-placed source earlier today.

GEORGE TOWN – Two senior lawyers here are expressing concern about the manner in which political coalitions are being asked to negotiate and gather enough MPs to form a new government, following the lack of a clear winner in the 15th general election (GE15).
As Pakatan Harapan (PH) won the most seats, at 82 (including Muda), the coalition’s chairman should be invited by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for an audience, lawyers Mohd Yusmaidi Yusoff and S. Raveentharan said.
This is in accordance with the convention under the Westminster system of democratic parliamentary governance that Malaysia practices as a Commonwealth country, both of them told The Vibes.
The two, who are also former elected representatives, said the Westminster system would normally see the coalition or party with the highest number of seats given the first choice to form a new government.
This is in the event after an election when no party or coalition secures a simple majority.

IPOH, Nov 20 — Umno Petaling Jaya division youth chief Azlan Abu Bakar today said that the party leadership must consider the possibility of forming the federal government with Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the betterment of the country.
"In my opinion, the first step of a proper party reform should start with working together with PH for the sake of the people and the country to have a stable government.
"Opting to work with PN will likely be a repeat of what has been happening for the past few years.
"And since PH has managed to win the highest number of seats, it means that people prefer PH administration rather than a PN coalition government,” he said referring to yesterday’s result showing PH has won 82 seats — the highest number for a coalition.

KOTA KINABALU: Warisan will support the formation of a federal government that can bring stability to the country and protect the interests of the people of Sabah and Sarawak, says its president Shafie Apdal.
Without naming any leader or party, he said Warisan had received phone calls from several political party leaders who expressed an interest to cooperate and the party was still considering the matter.
“What is important to us is the stability of the country and the importance of the Bornean states for the people.
“Even though the number (of parliamentary seats won by Warisan) is small, it can add stability to the country’s political situation and whoever wishes to form the federal government needs this support.

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin has come to the defence of party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in the wake of Barisan Nasional’s disastrous outing in the 15th general election (GE15).
Bung said Umno leaders needed to take collective responsibility and the blame should not rest squarely on Zahid.
“But it should not come to that level (of Zahid stepping down from the post),” he said, referring to calls for Zahid to resign.
“All Umno leaders must take responsibility. If there is a need to step down, then everyone has to do it,” he said when met after attending the Umno political bureau meeting here.

The only catch? The 75-year-old politician may have to do a controversial deal with his longtime nemesis.
Barisan Nasional (BN), the pro-Malay coalition that has ruled Malaysia almost uninterruptedly since independence in 1957, finds itself in the unlikely position of potential kingmaker after a washout performance left it far short of forming a government but with enough seats to tip the balance to decide who does.

KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders are set to gather for a meeting at coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s home in Bukit Damansara today, following PN’s resounding success at the national polls (GE15).
Believed to be in the residence currently are PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as well as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
Also spotted making his way into the housing area was Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
Media members have been stationed outside the compound since approximately 1pm.
Based on official GE15 results from the Election Commission (EC) as of 4.30am today, PN managed to secure a shocking win with 73 parliamentary seats.

Snowfall tops 6 feet in western New York, triggering road closures and flight cancellations the weekend before Thanksgiving
CNN — A historic snowstorm is slamming western New York state Saturday with more than 6 feet of snow in some places, closing roads, triggering driving bans and canceling flights the weekend before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Another round of heavy lake-effect snowfall is expected to return to the Buffalo area Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service. With most of the heavy snow bands falling over Lake Ontario, north of metro Buffalo on Saturday afternoon.
“Even though the band will be moving quickly, it is possible that additional amounts around a half foot or so could occur across the Buffalo metro area,” the National Weather Service said.
On Saturday afternoon, New York Governor Kathy Hochul touted the state’s storm preparedness and said crews have been working tirelessly to manage the situation.
“This is the effort we’ve brought together: bringing resources, people, equipment from all over the state of New York. And because we were so preemptive in this strike, we were able to avert many tragedies,” Hochul said.
She thanked western New Yorkers for shutting down major highways, implementing travel bans and staying home before the snow started to fall which helped prevent accidents, protect human life and ensure roads are safe and clear for emergency services.

Polling has officially closed for Malaysia’s 15th general election, as voter turnout defied expectations in what is arguably the most hotly contested polls the country has seen.
The latest data from the Election Commission showed 14.7 million people – or 70 per cent of 21 million eligible voters – had cast their votes as of 4pm local time, exceeding the previous record of around 12.4 million votes cast in 2018.
Still, that figure is some distance from the 82 per cent turnout in the 2018 vote. There are some 6 million new voters this time around, following new legislation lowering the voting age to 18 from 21 and enabling automatic voter registration.
Observers previously suggested a low turnout was a possibility amid apathy surrounding the country’s spin-dryer politics, which has seen three prime ministers govern the country since 2018’s vote.
This election is also unprecedented in that three distinct coalitions are vying for the right to lead the nation for the next five years – the Umno-led Barisan Nasional, multiracial Pakatan Harapan and Malay nationalist Perikatan Nasional.

IPOH – Perak PN deputy chairman, Razman Zakaria announced that the coalition has secured 26 state seats, shy of 30 required to form a simple majority in the state assembly.
As such, Razman said they are open to talk with other coalitions, specifically with BN, to form a stable government.
“However, we are clear that we will not be with PH…we are clear on our policy of ‘No Anwar, No DAP’,” he told the press, referring to PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Official results have placed PH with 24 seats and BN with 9.
No single coalition has a simple majority to form the state government, which possesses 59 state seats. – The Vibes, November 20, 2022
