KUALA LUMPUR – Fresh from settling her million-ringgit debt to a Paris-based film production company earlier this year, women development minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun is now being sued by a former “good friend”.

Plaintiff Ida Rahayu Md Noor is demanding RM130,000 cash, a 5% interest on the amount for every year the sum is not settled, legal cost, and any further relief deemed appropriate by the court.

This is after Ida Rahayu accused the women, family and community development minister for failing to repay her debt of the same amount that was borrowed over 12 years ago.

In her statement of claim filed at the Shah Alam Sessions Court on August 30, Ida Rahayu claimed that in May 2009, Rina had sought a personal loan amounting to RM130,000 as part of her advance payment to purchase a JM Bariani House Alamanda business franchise from Secret Heritage Sdn Bhd.

The outlet is addressed at Alamanda Putrajaya Shopping Centre.

34 years after Ops Lalang, still no sincere apology by Dr M
Posted by: superadmin - 10-27-2021, 11:15 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Kua Kia Soong

Operation Lalang was Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s worst abuse of power during his 23-year rule when he arrested and detained more than a hundred innocent Malaysians without trial under the infamous Internal Security Act (ISA) in 1987.

It happened to be his most desperate attempt at clinging to power.

It was a time during his term when he was faced with the biggest threat to his rule, with Team B under Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah challenging the results of the Umno elections. A court decision in Team B’s favour would have meant the end of Mahathir’s grasp on power.

China achieves quantum computational advantage in two mainstream technical routes
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 09:15 PM - Forum: Technology - No Replies

A Chinese research team has successfully designed a 66-qubit programmable superconducting quantum computing system named "Zuchongzhi 2.1," significantly enhancing the quantum computational advantage.

This remarkable feat makes China the first country to achieve a quantum computational advantage in two mainstream technical routes – one via photonics quantum computing technology and the other via superconducting quantum computing technology, the team noted.

The study was led by renowned Chinese quantum physicist Pan Jianwei and was published online on Monday Beijing Time in the journal Physical Review Letters and Science Bulletin.

In December 2020, the researchers built the quantum computer prototype, "Jiuzhang," through which up to 76 photons were detected, achieving quantum computational advantage.

China, US officials talk third time in a month, sending positive signal on trade and

Chinese and US senior officials on Tuesday held talks for the third time in October on economy and trade issues, following frequent high-level talks over the past months. The frequent China-US economic and trade talks have been substantive and groundbreaking, sending a very positive signal to the world.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, who is also chief of the Chinese side of the China-US comprehensive economic dialogue, held a video conversation with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday morning, and expressed concern over the US' additional tariffs and sanctions and its treatment on Chinese companies.

Although the two sides still have differences regarding their own concerns, the calls suggest a positive sentiment for future discussions in which the two sides could seek common ground while reserving differences, analysts said.

Following this latest round of talks, it is expected that the US Trade Representative (USTR) and the US Department of Commerce might roll out measures to lift additional tariffs on Chinese goods, at least in an indirect way, Gao Lingyun, an expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing who closely follows trade issues, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

Najib sues Thomas, govt over ‘malicious prosecution’
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 06:14 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Najib Razak has filed a lawsuit against former attorney-general Tommy Thomas and the government for alleged misfeasance in public office by pressing 1MDB related charges against him.

The former prime minister claimed that the charges filed against him during Thomas’ tenure were “part of a long-planned, premeditated exercise”.

“This was also in line with the then (Pakatan Harapan) government’s plan.

“As an AG, he (Thomas) carried out his duties, at least in relation to the plaintiff (Najib), as if he was a ‘PH agent’,” Najib said in his statement of claim sighted by FMT. The suit was filed earlier this week.

Signs of first planet found outside our galaxy
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2021, 01:49 PM - Forum: Astronomy - No Replies

Astronomers have found hints of what could be the first planet ever to be discovered outside our galaxy.

Nearly 5,000 "exoplanets" - worlds orbiting stars beyond our Sun - have been found so far, but all of these have been located within the Milky Way galaxy.

The possible planet signal discovered by Nasa's Chandra X-Ray Telescope is in the Messier 51 galaxy.

This is located some 28 million light-years away from the Milky Way.

This new result is based on transits, where the passage of a planet in front of a star blocks some of the star's light and yields a characteristic dip in brightness that can be detected by telescopes.

This general technique has already been used to find thousands of exoplanets.

China needs more coal but it’s not likely to turn to Australia for supply

China needs more coal to avert a power crisis — but it’s not likely to turn to Australia for supply
  • China is facing its worst power crisis in years due to a coal shortage.
  • Australia has the coal Beijing needs, but the world’s second-largest economy is unlikely to reverse an unofficial ban on Australian coal imports anytime soon, analysts told CNBC.
  • China stopped buying coal from Australia late last year, after Canberra backed a call for an international inquiry on how Beijing handled the Covid-19 outbreak.

China is facing its worst power crisis in years due to a coal shortage. While Australia has the coal Beijing needs, the world’s second-largest economy is unlikely to reverse an unofficial ban on Australian coal imports anytime soon, analysts told CNBC.

That’s despite recent media reports suggesting that China is releasing small quantities of Australian coal that was stuck at Chinese ports for months due to the ban.

“Reports that small quantities of Australian coal were allowed to clear customs in China have increased speculation that Chinese authorities will look to relax the import ban on Australian coal,” Vivek Dhar, mining and energy commodities analyst at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, told CNBC.

“We don’t think Chinese authorities will relax China’s ban on Australian coal this winter,” he said.

Late last year, China stopped buying Australian coal. That happened as trade tensions between the two countries soared after Canberra backed a call for an international inquiry into Beijing’s handling of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Before that, Australia was a major coal supplier to China — in 2019, some 38% of Chinese thermal coal imports came from Australia.

Tesla hits $1 trillion market cap for the first time after Hertz says it will buy 100,000 electric vehicles
  • Tesla hit a $1 trillion market cap for the first time after Hertz said Monday it would buy 100,000 electric vehicles.
  • News of the deal brought Tesla’s stock to a new record high just one trading day after the shares topped $900.
  • The deal comes more than a year after Hertz filed for bankruptcy protection during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, as demand for travel and rental vehicles dropped.

Tesla hit a $1 trillion market cap on Monday following news that Hertz is ordering 100,000 vehicles to build out its electric vehicle rental fleet by the end of 2022.

The company joins trillion-dollar market cap companies like Apple, Amazon and Microsoft.

News of the deal brought Tesla’s stock to more than $1,045 a share midday, a new record high one trading day after the shares broke $900. The stock closed up 12.66% at about $1,024 a share.

Strong EU sales and bullish analyst calls further boosted Tesla’s stock price. Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas raised his price target on Tesla to $1,200 a share from $900 on Sunday.
Jato Dynamics said Monday that Tesla’s Model 3 electric sedan became the first fully electric vehicle to top new car sales overall in Europe in September.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk celebrated the milestone on Twitter a minute before market close.
