Since Bersatu’s support for PM is conditional, expedite GE15, says Puad
Posted by: superadmin - 02-03-2022, 02:27 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi today said an early general election will settle the issue of “threats” by Bersatu over its support for Umno and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said elections would allow the prime minister more freedom to govern freely and dismiss “unreasonable requests” such as for the post of deputy prime minister.

Puad said that given the government’s weak majority in Parliament, there will be constant annoyances and threats from other parties.

More than $320 million stolen in latest apparent crypto hack
Posted by: superadmin - 02-03-2022, 01:36 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • Wormhole, one of the most popular bridges linking the ethereum and solana blockchains, lost about $320 million in an apparent hack Wednesday afternoon.
  • The two blockchains are popular in the world of DeFi, where programmable contracts can replace lawyers and bankers in some transactions, and NFTs.
  • But few users stick with one blockchain exclusively, so bridges like Wormhole are a necessary go-between.

One of the most popular bridges linking the ethereum and solana blockchains lost more than $320 million Wednesday afternoon in an apparent hack.

It is DeFi’s second-biggest exploit ever, just after the $600 million Poly Network crypto heist, and it is the largest attack to date on solana, a rival to ethereum that is increasingly gaining traction in the non-fungible token (NFT) and decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems.

Ethereum is the most used blockchain network, and it is a big player in the world of DeFi, in which programmable pieces of code known as smart contracts can replace middlemen like banks and lawyers in certain types of business transactions. A more recently introduced competitor, solana, is growing in popularity, because it is cheaper and faster to use than ethereum.

China's 'well-thought-out' anti-epidemic efforts at Winter Olympics impress foreign journalists

China's strict but "well-thought-out" efforts to stop the spread of the COVID-19 at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games have received praises from foreign journalists, who said that the efforts have made them reassured.

With two days to go before the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the Olympic Village has opened to athletes, journalists and other relevant personnel from all over the world. A reporter from Japan told the Global Times that he was impressed by the strict anti-epidemic system for the Games, saying that the efforts are "well-thought-out" and made him reassured in the "real bubble" in Beijing.

The journalist, who entered the closed-loop on January 27, shared with the Global Times on Wednesday his experience and feelings about China's anti-epidemic work for the Games.

"In Japan, I've started preparations from downloading 'My 2022' app, reporting my daily physical conditions, obtaining vaccination certificate, taking the PCR test, obtaining green code and applying for customs declaration, etc," said the journalist under the condition of anonymity.

Covid will always be an epidemic virus — not an endemic one, scientist warns
Posted by: superadmin - 02-03-2022, 10:23 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

  • Last week, the WHO warned that the next Covid variant will be even more contagious than omicron.
  • According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an epidemic occurs when the number of cases of a disease increases, often suddenly, above what is usually expected.
  • The WHO declares a disease a pandemic when its growth is exponential and it is spreading globally.
[Image: 107000421-16420315352022-01-12t232033z_1...=740&h=416]

Covid-19 will never become an endemic illness and will always behave like an epidemic virus, an expert in biosecurity has warned.

Raina MacIntyre, a professor of global biosecurity at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, told CNBC that although endemic disease can occur in very large numbers, the number of cases does not change rapidly as seen with the coronavirus.

“If case numbers do change [with an endemic disease], it is slowly, typically over years,” she said via email. “Epidemic diseases, on the other hand, rise rapidly over periods of days to weeks.”

Scientists use a mathematical equation, the so-called R naught (or R0), to assess how quickly a disease is spreading. The R0 indicates how many people will catch a disease from an infected person, with experts at Imperial College London estimating omicron’s could be higher than 3

If a disease’s R0 is greater than 1, growth is exponential, meaning the virus is becoming more prevalent and the conditions for an epidemic are present, MacIntyre said.

Eurozone inflation rises to new record high of 5.1%
Posted by: superadmin - 02-03-2022, 09:57 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: european_union_euro_general_afp_pic_01062021.PNG]

BRUSSELS – Inflation in the eurozone soared to a new record high in January, official data showed today, adding pressure on the European Central Bank ahead of a monetary policy meeting this week.

The figure hit 5.1% last month, a first since the official Eurostat agency started to compile the data in 1997.

The European Central Bank, in charge of euro monetary policy, has a medium-term inflation target of 2%.

Its board meets tomorrow and observers expect the ECB to stick to its current rates, which are historically low in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, despite the inflationary pressure.

Any tightening could threaten economic recovery and weigh down indebted companies and governments.

“January’s inflation data support our view that the ECB will soon forecast inflation to be at its target over the medium term,” the firm Capital Economics said in response to the latest data.

Havana Syndrome may be caused by ‘pulsed energy’
Posted by: superadmin - 02-03-2022, 09:23 AM - Forum: International News - No Replies

Pulsed electromagnetic energy "plausibly explains" some of the cases of the mysterious "Havana Syndrome" illness, a new US intelligence community report says.

There has been a contentious debate over whether symptoms afflicting US staff around the world were caused by some kind of device or were psychological in nature.

The latest report from a US Intelligence Community panel of experts says the symptoms are "genuine and compelling" and may have been caused by an external source.

But the panel does not look at who might be responsible.

Beginning in Havana, Cuba in 2016, US intelligence officers and diplomats began complaining of an array of unusual symptoms. At first, the claims were largely dismissed within government.

But in the last year, they have been taken more seriously with US officials have been encouraged to report similar symptoms. That has led to a flood of cases, numbering at least a thousand from around the world.

The top 3 dirty tricks in Malaysian politics
Posted by: superadmin - 02-03-2022, 09:05 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: shankar-r-santhiram-columnist-new-170321-1.jpg]

For the longest time, we had an “election season” which came round once every five years. This is when politicians would earnestly kiss babies, resurface local roads, and make grandiose promises.

While there was always an air of anticipation, in Malaysia the result was usually a foregone conclusion.

As a kid, I even remember the quaint little ditty that was aired on television to encourage voter turnout. It had a really catchy tune and if you were born before the 90s, you’d recognise the words, “…mari lah mari, pergi mengundi, jangan lupa kewajipan pada negara”.

But since our last general election in 2018, it feels like we’ve been on a permanent election season.

Protests are un-Malaysian? You’d rather sell out?
Posted by: superadmin - 02-03-2022, 08:46 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: shankar-r-santhiram-columnist-new-170321-1.jpg]

True to form, our politicians and those with vested interests spew out nonsense about protests not being part of Malaysian culture. They say it’s a Western construct.

But historically, we got rid of the British through protests. Our New Economic Policy (NEP) was borne out of protests. And a few years ago, the protests organised by Bersih (The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections) led to a ground swell of change in our political landscape.

Younger Malaysians are especially vested in being vocal for their future.

Our support for you is conditional, Bersatu leader reminds PM
Posted by: superadmin - 02-03-2022, 08:37 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: wan-saiful-wan-jan-n-ismail-sabri-collage-030222.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu reminded Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob last night that the support the party was providing him was conditional.

This clause would be highlighted at ceramahs in the run-up to the Johor elections, the party’s information chief, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, said.

Wan Saiful also reminded Ismail that it was Bersatu who nominated him for the prime minister’s post after Muhyiddin Yassin resigned.

“We need to remember that Ismail is the prime minister today not because of Umno. Umno never nominated him.

“They wanted Zahid (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi),” he said, referring to the Umno president. Ismail is an Umno vice-president.
