Biden & Putin’s dueling speeches show the end of the Ukraine war is a long way off

Biden and Putin’s dueling speeches show why the end of the Ukraine war is a long way off
[Image: 1247352768.0.jpg]

After a surprise visit to Kyiv in the midst of the ongoing war, President Joe Biden delivered a rallying speech on US support for Ukraine.

Speaking to a crowd of thousands in Warsaw, Poland, on Tuesday, Biden framed the war as a battle between democracy and autocracy, as he has consistently done for the past year. He expanded upon the rhetoric of his recent State of the Union address, saying that since Russia invaded Ukraine nearly one year ago, “the whole world faced a test for the ages,” and emphasized the resolve of the US and NATO to continue to bolster Ukraine’s defense.

Hours earlier in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered his own address. He justified Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with some revisionist history, emphasized the massive quantity of weapons the West has provided Ukraine, and announced the withdrawal from an important arms control agreement with the United States. It’s a chilling indication that the stakes of this war are not just Ukraine’s future but the world’s future. The threat of a nuclear conflict always lingers in the background.

“The worst-case scenario is escalation,” Hans Kundnani of the British think tank Chatham House told me. “It seems to me the best-case scenario here is a forever war, unless the Biden administration does push toward negotiations.”

But neither Ukraine nor Russia have expressed any openness to negotiations at this stage.

Tuesday’s split-screen speeches are a reminder that a year into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, both Biden and Putin are doubling down. “We have every confidence that you’re going to continue to prevail,” Biden told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a day earlier in Ukraine. But that confidence in public may be obscuring anxieties that foreign policy leaders are expressing in private as the war continues into its second year, as major democracies like India decline to take a firm side, and as the risks of the war expanding beyond Ukraine’s borders are heightened.

Heads must roll to make civil service truly accountable for public fund wastage
Posted by: superadmin - 02-22-2023, 11:24 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

THE multi-million ringgit waste and loss of public money highlighted in the Auditor-General’s Report is disappointing.

We have reached a stage where each year we hear the same old story: that of mounting waste and losses by many of those tasked with the responsibility of adhering to standard operating procedures in the management of the country’s wealth.

Each year, we have taken the Auditor-General’s Report for granted. And we hear the same old responses: “we will investigate” or “we are looking into it”.

The people can do nothing but laugh out loud – without much hope of seeing any serious action taken on any of these reports.

Outcome of probe into judge Nazlan to be revealed, says source
Posted by: superadmin - 02-22-2023, 11:18 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The outcome of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s probe into Court of Appeal judge Nazlan Ghazali will be revealed in Parliament, says a source in the know.

Last week, two MPs, Barisan Nasional’s Manndzri Nasib (Tenggara) and Perikatan Nasional’s Wan Saiful Wan Jan (Tasek Gelugor), urged law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said to reveal the outcome of the anti-graft agency’s probe into Nazlan.

“MACC has given its answer to Parliament and Azalina is expected to reply in the Dewan Rakyat today or tomorrow,” said the source who declined to be named.

Last September, MACC chief Azam Baki said the investigation into Nazlan has been completed, but further details cannot be divulged.

Azam said he was not at liberty to disclose the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ (AGC) instructions.

Adam Radlan claims trial to accepting RM4.1mil in bribes
Posted by: superadmin - 02-22-2023, 11:14 AM - Forum: Stop Corruptions - No Replies

[Image: 08a065b4-adam-radlan-adam-muhammad_fmt_21.2.23.jpg]

SHAH ALAM: Businessman Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad has claimed trial to two more charges of accepting bribes totalling RM4.1 million in relation to the Jana Wibawa programme.

The Segambut Bersatu deputy chief pleaded not guilty at the sessions court here today after the charges were read to him before judge Rozilah Salleh.

Adam Radlan is accused of accepting a RM2 million bribe through the bank account of Bayu Bumiraya Sdn Bhd, in which he is a director, from Lian Tan Chuan.

The bribe is said to be a kickback for him to help Nepturis Sdn Bhd obtain the contract to build the Klang Utara police headquarters from Putrajaya, a project worth RM141 million.

The offence allegedly took place between April 2022 and January 2023 at the Bukit Jalan Universiti CIMB Bank branch in Petaling Jaya.

Adam Radlan is also accused of accepting another RM2.1 million bribe through Bayu Bumiraya’s accounts from Mat Jusoh Mamat, managing director of MIE Infrastructure & Energy Sdn Bhd, to help the firm obtain a road project in Perlis worth RM47.8 million.

The offence allegedly took place between November 2021 and  December 2022 at the same CIMB branch.

Dr M’s race baiting, partnership with Ibrahim Ali doesn’t augur well for country
Posted by: superadmin - 02-22-2023, 11:05 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Clement Stanley

The possibility of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali coming together under Ibrahim’s Putra reeks of desperation.

This is especially after Mahathir mischievously said he feared a cut in Malay power should Malay majority seats be reduced as a result of a change in election boundaries.

Yes, Mahathir had joined forces with Ibrahim in the past under Gerakan Tanah Air for the 15th general election, but the former Langkawi MP was with Pejuang then. He has since left.

But with Mahathir’s latest concern about the possible dwindling of Malay power, is the grandmaster of politics falling back on an old trick – the race card.

Recap: Pandora Papers’ exposé on Daim, sons links to British companies
Posted by: superadmin - 02-22-2023, 07:29 AM - Forum: Stop Corruptions - No Replies

JOHOR BARU – Reports have recently surfaced stating that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has begun investigations against a former minister.

Various portals, citing sources, pointed out that the person in question happens to be an 84-year-old former finance minister who served under Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s prime ministership, leading many to speculate that the individual concerned is none other than Tun Daim Zainuddin.

Coincidentally, in 2021, Daim courted controversy when his name appeared in the Pandora Papers leak – an exposé by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) of key individuals and their links to offshore entities in various jurisdictions.

Daim had responded to the revelations, telling Malaysiakini that he has paid taxes in all jurisdictions where he conducts business. He also said that not all firms he has links to are owned by him, explaining that they are partially controlled by his kin.

This is what The Vibes has found out so far from ICIJ’s offshore database as well as British company searches and land registries.

More than 72% of respondents see US as the biggest obstacle to Ukraine peace process

GT investigates: More than 72% of respondents see US as the biggest obstacle to Ukraine peace process: GT survey

About one year ago, Chinese people, just like almost everyone else around the globe, were shocked by a massive military conflict that has profoundly changed international relations and the geopolitical landscape of Europe. Unfortunately, this terrible tragedy between Russia and Ukraine is still far from being over.

From February 17 to 20, Global Times conducted an online survey that received 5,214 response samples from Chinese netizens around the globe, with more than 68.16 percent of the participants saying the US is the one that "bears primary responsibility and should be held accountable for the outbreak of the conflict," and 39.24 percent believing that the conflict will continue for a longer term at its current intensity.

China is a country with a neutral stance and has not become directly involved in the conflict, but the other relevant parties, including Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany and the US, are all expecting China to play a bigger role to serve their demands for mediation or help them pressure their adversaries in this conflict. The opinion of Chinese society is crucial for people to understand what China can and will do for a potential peaceful settlement of the conflict in the future.

China’s shipping containers pile up at overcrowded port as overseas orders dwindle
Posted by: superadmin - 02-21-2023, 11:23 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • A kilometre-long queue of trucks outside a major container terminal in Guangdong province reflects how exports are doing little to help China’s economic recovery
  • Container leasing and purchasing prices in major Asian ports have fallen sharply, and a rebound is not expected for at least a few months

[Image: a2f67a8f-38ab-48c2-9a3e-033430f7e1e8_a2b...1676892272]

Although the Lunar New Year holiday ended weeks ago, not all truck drivers in Shenzhen are back to work. On the expressway heading towards Yantian International Container Terminal, several trucks with no containers on their long trailers can be seen parked on the roadside, part of a static convoy that stretches nearly a kilometre (0.62 miles).

“These are only a small portion [of all the empty trucks]. The rest had to be parked in Dongguan,” said a driver surnamed Huang, referring to another city in Guangdong that is an hour drive away from Yantian – one of the biggest Chinese container ports for foreign trade.

Huang is one of the lucky drivers. He had just unloaded a container at the terminal on a Friday afternoon. He said the port has more than 15,000 registered truck drivers, but only around 2,000 of them now have work.

“I feel that this year’s [export] market will be the worst,” he said. “I just heard from many factory bosses saying that their electronic products can’t be exported, as their foreign clients haven’t placed orders, and lots of factories have already moved to Southeast Asia.”

Perhaps Anwar should rope in Joe Ghani as Tengku Zafrul’s replacement
Posted by: superadmin - 02-21-2023, 10:54 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Editor’s Note: International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has just confirmed on his Facebook page that he has testified as a witness to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) to assist the investigation of the Jana Wibawa Contractors Empowerment Programme yesterday (Feb 20) evening.

“I will continue to cooperate with any authority if necessary. Thank You,” he penned.

WITH numerous pending ‘dates’ with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) likely to pile up on his dairy in the coming days or weeks, one wonders if that would not take a toll on the job performance of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz as the International Trade and Industry Minister.

With already graft-associated liabilities aplenty for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his unity government to stomach, the very least expected of the technocrat-turned-politician – even though he has claimed time and again that he has nothing to hide – is to do the honourable thing that many Japanese or South Korean ministers would have done in his situation.

As it is, Anwar has a mountain to climb in the looming six states’ election slated for mid-2023 by having to contend with the 47 corruption charges levelled at his deputy and UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
