The growing U.S. deficit raises questions about funding as China cuts U.S. debt holdi

The growing U.S. deficit raises questions about funding as China cuts U.S. debt holdings
  • The U.S. deficit is burgeoning and it’s set to grow much bigger with a planned second stimulus package to beat the pandemic fallout.
  • The additional costs of funding the package will have to come from issuing more U.S. Treasurys — but that raises the question of who will buy them, given that China, previously the top purchaser of the Treasurys, is cutting its holdings.

The U.S. deficit is already burgeoning and it’s set grow even bigger as lawmakers push for a second stimulus package to beat the pandemic fallout.

The additional costs of funding the package will have to be through issuing more U.S. Treasurys — but that raises the question of who will buy them. It comes amid new shifts in the geopolitical landscape, as China — previously the top purchaser of U.S. Treasurys — cuts its holdings, analysts pointed out.

“While the US economy is gradually healing, the costs of handling the pandemic are still stacking up,” wrote Kristjan Mee, a research and analytics strategist at asset manager Schroders.

He pointed out that the rolling 12-month U.S. budget deficit was close to $3 trillion as of the end of August, following the CARES Act — the first relief package aimed at tackling the pandemic which added over $2 trillion to the already large deficit.

Trump's final campaign pitch is a false warning of 'cheating' in Pennsylvania
Posted by: superadmin - 11-03-2020, 07:41 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

(CNN)President Donald Trump closed out his bid for a second term with a false warning that "cheating" in the key state of Pennsylvania could lead to violence in the streets. It was his latest attempt to tarnish the integrity of an election clash with Democrat Joe Biden that nearly 100 million Americans have already validated by casting early votes in the middle of the pandemic.

Trump's inflammatory behavior threatened to exacerbate already fraught national tensions amid fears of civil unrest that prompted businesses in some cities to board up their premises. Trump will spend Election Night behind a high iron fence that is now ringing the White House.

The President's final act of the campaign threatens to rock a surreal election at a destabilizing moment in history, with the US battling a once-in-a century public health crisis, a consequent economic slump and embroiled in an unresolved racial reckoning. But the massive turnout already and the potential of new records being set on Tuesday suggest voters are taking their civic duty extraordinarily seriously.

Trump told reporters that a Supreme Court decision allowing Pennsylvania to count mail-in votes that arrive up to three days after the election would lead to cheating at a "very high level" and was "very dangerous." In a later tweet, tagged as possibly misleading by Twitter, Trump warned it could "induce violence in the streets." At a rally in Wisconsin he claimed the decision could "put our country in danger."

His gambit was a fitting coda for nearly four years in office so far, in which he has constantly stretched the pillars of American democracy almost to breaking point and a campaign in which he has repeatedly spread misinformation about a "rigged" election.

PAS veep admits getting youths challenging, says millennials don’t pick parties anymore
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — PAS is having a hard time maintaining its support among young Malaysians, the Islamist party vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah has admitted.

Sinar Harian reported him saying the millennial generation differs from the earlier generations who would vote according to party lines.“It is not easy to maintain the existing record and we have to review many aspects, especially our policies which have to be adjusted to contemporary political developments and environs,”

“The biggest challenge is the young or millennial generation, as they do not choose parties. They vote for what is in front of them, and for them the party is irrelevant,” Mohd Amar told reporters after his visit to Kelantan State Museum’s exhibition on three decades of Islamic governance.

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh today retracted his statement calling the Bible “distorted or altered”, and apologised to Christians.

Zawawi, who made the statement in the Dewan Rakyat in August, said he had no intention of hurting the feelings of Christians when he made the statement during the debate on the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2020 to propose heavier fines for drink driving.

Zawawi’s claim that biblical injunctions about drinking alcohol had been “distorted or altered” led to a chorus of protests and condemnation from Christian associations and politicians.

Actor Johnny Depp loses ‘wife beater’ libel case in London
Posted by: superadmin - 11-02-2020, 08:46 PM - Forum: Celebreties News - No Replies

  • Depp had sued the paper over the story in 2018, in which it was claimed that he had been violent toward his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard.
  • Lurid details of the former couple’s relationship were heard in a London court in the summer.

LONDON — Hollywood actor Johnny Depp lost a libel case on Monday against British tabloid newspaper The Sun which published an article that called him a “wife beater.”

Depp had sued the paper over the story in 2018, in which it was claimed that he had been violent toward his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard.

The article questioned Depp’s casting in the second instalment of the “Fantastic Beasts” movie series, with the headline: “Gone Potty: How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?’”

Depp denied the claims and brought a case against News Group Newspapers, which publishes The Sun, and Dan Wootton, the journalist that wrote the article and now an executive editor at the newspaper.

The libel battle attracted widespread publicity for its lurid portrait of the private lives of Depp and his then-wife Heard, and their tempestuous relationship before the couple divorced in 2017.

Details of the former couple’s arguments, alleged affairs and Depp’s troubles with drink and drug abuse were heard by Judge Mr Justice Nicol at the Royal Courts of Justice over the course of three weeks in July.

Nicol ruled on Monday that the paper’s allegations were “substantially true,” saying in a ruling published online that “I accept that the defendants have shown that the words they published were substantially true in the meanings I have held them to bear.”

A spokesperson for The Sun newspaper tweeted on Monday that the paper had “stood up and campaigned for the victims of domestic abuse for over twenty years. Domestic abuse victims must never be silenced and we thank the Judge for his careful consideration and thank Amber Heard for her courage in giving evidence to the court.”

Pejuang, Maszlee split over support for Anwar, claims Dr M’s aide
Posted by: superadmin - 11-02-2020, 06:12 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An aide to Dr Mahathir Mohamad claims that the former prime minister’s new party Pejuang and Maszlee Malik parted ways after the latter decided to support opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

In a Facebook post, the aide said that the Simpang Renggam MP had allegedly signed a statutory declaration (SD) throwing his support for Anwar as prime minister.

“Maszlee had signed the SD despite having attended a Pejuang meeting where its members agreed not to support anyone associated with kleptocracy, and to wait and see who supported Anwar before the party decided on a stance,” the aide said.

According to the aide, Maszlee had also visited Mahathir’s house for dinner the night after he allegedly signed the SD in support of Anwar.
