Cancer fourth leading cause of death in Malaysia - DOSM 2023 report |

CANCER is the fourth leading cause of death in Malaysia, increasing from 10.5 per cent in 2021 to 12.6 per cent in 2022, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) 2023 report.
Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad today said that based on Malaysia's 2023 Health Facts, cancer is also a leading cause of death in private hospitals, accounting for 26.44 per cent and the fourth leading cause of death in government hospitals (9.29 per cent).
"This high mortality can also be linked with the detection of the disease at advanced stages, namely stages three and four, which account for over 60 per cent of all reported cancer cases, according to a report by the Malaysia National Cancer Registry report," he said in a statement.
According to the registry, 168,822 new cancer cases were reported over five years from 2017 to 2021.

Clarify stance on 1MDB scandal, DAP told |

PETALING JAYA: DAP must clarify its stance on the 1MDB scandal following the Federal Territories Pardons Board’s decision to commute former prime minister Najib Razak’s sentence in the SRC International case, says former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming.
In a statement, Ong said DAP had extensively used the 1MDB scandal in its campaigns for the 2018 and 2022 general elections.
“This (clarification) must include taking a firm position that the ongoing 1MDB cases against Najib should continue and not experience the same fate as the conditional discharge granted to deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (in his Yayasan Akal Budi case),” he said.
Last Friday, it was announced that Najib’s prison sentence had been reduced from 12 years to six. His fine was also reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million. However, if he fails to settle the fine, a year will be added to his sentence, the board said.

Too early to tell who will be GE16 partners, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: With the next general election several years away, analysts have looked askance at predictions of electoral partnerships.
James Chin of the University of Tasmania said no political leader can make promises on where their coalition or party will head, or with whom they would cooperate. “Everything will be dependent on two or three years’ time when we go for elections,” he told FMT.
He added: “Nowadays, even one week is very long in Malaysian politics.”
Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook had been non-committal in their recent statements.
He added that the variables at play in each political party could change the political scene very quickly.
The relationships in the current unity government would also change if any political leader dies, he said. “We are speaking of politicians who are mostly already in their 70s, so let’s be realistic, deaths can happen at any time and change the political equation.”

Syed Hussin appointment makes opposition look bad, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: The appointment of Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal as head of a government committee on prices and the cost of living has put the opposition in a bad light, an analyst said.
Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Syed Hussin’s appointment looks good for the government but not for the opposition, particularly Bersatu.
“It looks bad because an opposition MP is willing to work for the government, which gives the perception that opposition MPs are not loyal (to their own parties), especially to Bersatu,” he told FMT.
Bersatu and PAS are partners in Perikatan Nasional, which forms the parliamentary opposition.
Azmi also said the appointment has caused Perikatan Nasional to lose credibility as it has always claimed to have sufficient support to topple Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

How to Use Jardiance Tablet |

Jardiance tablets are an effective medication for managing blood sugar levels in individuals with Type 2 diabetes, and it's essential to use them correctly for the best results. Your doctor will prescribe the right dose for you, typically a Jardiance 10 mg tablet or a Jardiance 25 mg tablet. It is crucial to follow their instructions carefully. Take Jardiance once a day, preferably at the same time every day, to maintain a steady level of the medication in your body. You can take it with or without food, according to your preference. Remember to swallow the tablet whole, without crushing, chewing, or breaking it, along with a glass of water. Regular monitoring of your blood sugar levels is a key part of your treatment plan, which may also include diet, exercise, and other medications.
As Jardiance increases urination, it is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Tablets should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat, in their original container. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but avoid taking two doses at once. Regular doctor visits are important to track your progress and ensure the effectiveness of the medication. Be aware of possible interactions with other medications and alcohol, and consult your doctor for advice. While Jardiance is not a cure for diabetes, it can significantly help control the condition when used as directed. Always seek guidance from your healthcare provider for individualized medical advice. You can get the Jardiance 10 mg price within your budget if you want to take this medicine.

Gerakan’s relevance to non-Malay voters debatable, says analyst |

PETALING JAYA: An analyst says Gerakan’s political relevance depends entirely on its alliance with Perikatan Nasional (PN), following claims by the party president of an increase in support since joining the opposition coalition.
James Chin of the University of Tasmania said the uptick in votes for Gerakan was largely due to the support of Bersatu and PAS rather than a direct appeal to non-Malay voters.
“The votes that go towards Gerakan primarily stem from Malay voters who support PAS and Bersatu, not necessarily from the non-Malay community,” he told FMT.
Gerakan president Dominic Lau recently said that his party remained relevant in Malaysia’s political landscape, citing an increase in the number of votes received at recent elections.
However, Chin said Gerakan’s role was mainly to provide a semblance of diversity for PN.

Federal power ‘a daydream’ for PAS without non-Malay votes, says analyst |

PETALING JAYA: An analyst has urged PAS not to get carried away by its success in capturing the Malay vote, saying the Islamic party should instead reflect on how its lack of support from non-Malays is keeping it from its goal of capturing Putrajaya.
Speaking to FMT, Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara acknowledged that PAS leads the state governments in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis.
However, he said the party’s main goal should be to win power at the federal level.
Without the support of the non-Malays, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, he said, any hope PAS had of governing the country might remain a “daydream”.
“Perikatan Nasional (PN) is in a bad state (due to non-Malay support), even worse than Umno,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has frozen several bank accounts believed to hold tens of millions of ringgit belonging to a businessman with a Tan Sri title, an agency source said.
According to the source, the action was taken following MACC’s investigation into a contract awarded to a government vehicle supplier in July 2023.
The source said MACC also raided the businessman’s residence and company, retrieving financial documents that could aid the investigation.
“More than 100 private accounts and companies, worth millions of ringgit under the control of the Tan Sri in question, have been analysed to observe trends in fund transfers to specific individuals.
