KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has urged the government to immediately halt the next phase of the littoral combat ship (LCS) project.

He said RM6 billion had already been “squandered” with no progress to show, adding that the funds for the next phase of the project should be redirected to assist the people instead.

“The next phase (of the project) must be stopped as there have yet to be any commitments made. We have to arrest this and stop the nonsense,” he said at a press conference in Parliament.

“The half a billion (for the next phase of the project) should be spent for the welfare of veterans who have been clamouring for support.”

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya has agreed to declassify the governance, procurement and finance investigation committee’s (JKSTUPKK) report on the littoral combat ship (LCS) project.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the report by JKSTUPKK, which was chaired by former auditor-general Ambrin Buang, will be made available to the public.

In a statement, Ismail also said the Cabinet agreed to declassify the 2019 forensic report on the project, though Putrajaya will need to obtain the attorney-general and auditor-general’s advice first.

He maintained that the government viewed the issues surrounding the RM9 billion project seriously and had directed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to expedite its probe.

“If there is strong evidence, the attorney-general must file charges and bring those responsible (for any malpractice) to justice.
